Received a CRA Review Letter? What to Do Next
Published October 13, 2026 · General Canadian tax guidance
Read the full letter, identify the tax year and claim being reviewed, and note the response deadline. A review means the CRA needs to verify information; it does not automatically mean you did something wrong.
Our CRA correspondence assistance starts with understanding the request and the records needed to respond.
1. Check what the letter actually asks for
Highlight the reference number, tax year, amount or claim under review, deadline and submission instructions. A document request is different from a notice of reassessment or a collection notice. Send the complete letter to your preparer, including any questionnaire or second page.
2. Confirm it is genuine if you are unsure
Use official CRA contact information to verify a suspicious request before sending documents or making a payment. The CRA’s income-tax-review guidance explains how to verify a letter and contact the team handling the file.
3. Build a response folder
- The complete CRA letter and attachments.
- The filed return and the schedule containing the claim.
- The receipts, statements or other evidence requested.
- A short explanation of how the documents support the amount claimed.
- A list of anything missing and the steps taken to obtain it.
As an organizational example, label medical receipts by provider and date, then create an index matching the documents to your explanation. An index makes the response easier to follow but does not replace the evidence.
4. Respond using the stated instructions
Include the CRA reference number and provide all applicable documents within the timeframe in the letter. Online submission may be available through your CRA account or your authorized representative. Keep a copy and the submission confirmation.
What if documents are missing or I need more time?
Contact the CRA using the number in the verified letter. Explain what is missing or request more time before the deadline where possible. Do not assume an extension has been granted. If receipts are unavailable, provide an explanation and ask what other support may be accepted.
Can someone respond for me?
An authorized representative may assist with the response. Use the CRA’s authorization process; you do not need to share your CRA account password with your preparer.
